Preventative Closure

Being Extra Cautious

In early July there was a small spike in Covid-19 connected to downtown Kelowna (Click here for info)
Interior Health has stated that there were potential exposures in the downtown area around Canada day.

Lots of people were downtown and potentially exposed.
So far the number of people infected is still relatively small and it will hopefully stay that way –  but many people were potentially exposed.

We are not aware of any exposures at the clinic
Either by staff or clients. If you’ve been to our clinic, you are not required to self isolate etc.

Out of an abundance of caution, the clinic is closing until July 21
Given how many people were potentially exposed in downtown Kelowna around Canada day, we have decided to close until July 21, which is 14 days after the last known potential exposure downtown*. This will allow anyone potentially exposed enough time to self monitor before the clinic reopens.

Safety is our first priority
We know that it is not fun to have appointments cancelled at the last minute, but the health and safety of our staff and clients always comes first. We look forward to seeing you again soon!

*There were a few potential exposures at a downtown spin studio after July 7, but we are monitoring for this as well

Update

All appointments are suspended until further notice.

It is unclear when the BC Health Authority will give the green light for us to return to operation. It was initially hinted as possibly April 1st, but this seems highly unlikely. In light of this, we are suspending all appointments until we get the green light.

What does that mean?

We know that many of our clients prefer a certain day and time for appointments that work for them. Cancelling our future appointments could mean losing these spots. So rather than cancel all upcoming appointments, we are leaving them in our schedules for now. This way we can stay organized and prioritize these appointment times once we open our doors again.

What’s the return plan?

As soon as we have the green light, we will send out an email and then call everyone with upcoming appointments to confirm. After the prebooked appointments are confirmed, we will begin to phone anyone who has had an appointment cancelled as a result of this shut down.

Do clients need to do anything?

No. We will be in contact with you as soon as we have the green light to open. If you have any appointments already booked, they will still be in the schedule when we reopen. You don’t need to call to cancel any appointments and you don’t need to worry about any late cancellation or no-show fees during this closure.

And lastly

This is a confusing time and we are still working out all the details. We can’t guarantee that there won’t be any hiccups once we get up and running again. What we can guarantee is that at least for the first month that we return, we won’t be charging any no show or late cancellation fees. So if you have upcoming appointments booked when we reopen and we can’t get hold of you, there’s no need to worry about any fees. We’re all doing our best and we appreciate your continued support.

If you have any questions or need anything from us (receipts etc) we continue to check voicemail and email daily. To contact us, please call and leave a voicemail at 250-575-0120, or email info@kelownamedicalmassage.com.

We wish everyone the best during this time and hope for good health. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Important Update

Effective March 17, 2020, the BC Provincial Health Officer has issued an order that any business that cannot maintain a social distance of 1-2 meters needs to close for 14 days.

In consideration of this order, our clinic is temporarily closing with a planned reopen date of April 1st, 2020. We will be contacting all clients who have an appointment before this date to reschedule. Appointments on or after April 1st remain unchanged. As soon as we have confirmed our reopen date, we will send out an email and call all clients with upcoming appointments to confirm.

We will be providing email updates regarding our clinic as they become available.

During the next week or so, we will not have reception coverage for our phones. Instead, we will be checking and responding to voicemail and email daily. If you need to contact us, please call and leave a voicemail at 250-575-0120, or email info@kelownamedicalmassage.com.

We wish everyone the best during this time and hope for good health. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Meet Rietta Brisco – Registered Massage Therapist

Rietta Brisco is one of our registered massage therapists here at Kelowna Medical Massage. She is new to Kelowna and since moving here she has been enjoying exploring all that the sunny Okanagan has to offer. Rietta graduated from the Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy 3000 hour program in 2014, she practices in all areas of massage therapy including deep tissue massage, sports massage, myofascial release and more. Low back pain and hip pain are two very common problems she treats. Rietta particularly enjoys working with athletes since she herself has been a devoted athlete for most of her life and has experienced first hand the impact that massage therapy can have on athletic performance and recovery.

When Rietta was quite young, she participated in a lot of competitive biathlons. Her friend’s mother was a registered massage therapist who travelled with them to many of the races and would perform sports massage on the girls. Rietta noticed right away how much the massage positively impacted her performance, this was the first time she became interested in massage therapy. As she continued participating in everything from competitive horse back riding to running to ski racing she continued to use massage to recover faster after hard training sessions and events. Eventually she decided to become a registered massage therapist to turn her passion for health and her belief in massage therapy into a career.

Rietta treats a lot of clients who experience postural issues or chronic pain, as well as athletes who have experienced injury or are interested in integrating massage into their training programs. She finds it gratifying to work with clients who are pro-active in their treatment and she loves having a part in getting them back on their feet after an injury or helping them improve their performance. Her background in sports makes her the ideal RMT to help prevent and recover from sports injuries.

Rietta is a very active person and enjoys hiking and backpacking. Her favourite trip was a 4 day hike along the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail on Vancouver Island. It was a 47-kilometre wilderness hike along the southwestern coast of the island which she says was absolutely beautiful. Her other favourite activity is stand up paddle boarding, she is patiently waiting for her father to make some finishing touches to the board he made for her so she can get out onto Okanagan lake as soon as possible.

The number one thing Rietta would like her clients to know is that their massage is tailored to them and that they should communicate with their therapist. Sometimes treatment can be a bit painful, but it should not be unbearable. Massage therapists are here to help you, they want you to have get the most benefit out of your treatment but they also want you to be comfortable and not feel like your appointments are something that simply must be endured. She also emphasizes the importance of following through with your home care as directed by your RMT. Following the instructions for home care are critical to your improvement!
