What is Sports Massage?
Sports massage is one of the oldest forms of massage, being around since at least the time of the gladiators. Yes, gladiators received massage regularly to help keep in shape. Throughout the ages it was also commonly used on warriors before war. Nowadays sports massage is used by many athletes including boxers, MMA fighters, Olympians, marathon runners and golfers.
Sports massage is generally broken down into three categories: Pre-event, Post-event and ongoing treatment/rehabilitation.
This type of sports massage is generally fast and vigorous and best used just before an event, ideally within a half hour or so from the event. The purpose here is to prepare the body for action.
This type of sports massage usually occurs immediately after the event – the purpose being to prevent soreness from the event. It is still a fairly vigorous massage intended to promote circulation, but it is generally more relaxing than pre-event. It has always been very popular among professional athletes but is now also becoming quite popular among amateur marathon runners and other amateur athletes.
This type of sports massage is focused on dealing with sports issues such as rotator cuff tears, tendonitis, ligament sprains, muscle strains, limited flexibility and general soreness associated with training. It is usually quite vigorous but it can be relaxing when need be.
